It’s not easy to explain how and why numerical models are used to study volcanic activity.
We made a first attempt several years ago, with a CD-Rom, later transferred to a website: È VIVO! Eruzioni VIrtuali al VesuviO!.
The website reports information on volcanic processes, in general, and on the model we used to simulate pyroclastic flows.
There you can see 2D animations of the pyroclastic flows propagating down the slope of a volcano.
(You can read about it in Todesco et al., 2006).
We collaborate with schools (age 6 to 13), organizing slideshows, lessons and hands-on experiments, and providing materials, sometime within the framework of the Edurisk project.
You can have a taste of it below...
The next step was to move to 3D. To show those results we produced a DVD for the INGV Outreach series!
The DVD contains a short video (in Italian, with English subtitles), 3D computer animations, and interviews to people studying these flows and of their effects.

In 2011 we participated to the
Researchers’ Night 2011
(you can find us here: Everyday Science).
That was fun!

Lots of fun things can be done to see
how volcano works... Check it out:
It’s all about bubbles!
When the volcano sleeps... we take look at its dreams.
What is going on at Campi Flegrei?
(sorry, at this time in Italian only...)
